It is no news that we waste power in Nigeria, and at the end of the month when the bill comes, everybody will be swearing for NEPA Papa, lol!!! I know this for a fact because I and my compound people are sitting cozy on this very table; well let us just say I moved to another table more recently because I don’t like anything that affects my money, if you know, you know dear!
So, you are probably here to know how to stop that small device PHCN gave you from giving you a heart attack, the worst part is that beep the device makes when you have less than 20Kw left, lol!! That is the sound of another premature debit alert looming, constantly checking the hand held meter, rostering your appliances on-time, yet your 100Kw cannot cross 4 days and by end of the month you won’t have enough liver to calculate what you have spent on Power, as per what you don’t calculate cant kee you.
Knowledge is no longer power, Knowledge is Money and Smart Spending, First of all, you must know that you can reduce your power consumption by 40-50% simply by auditing all your electronics, cutting off the high consumption appliances or switching to less power consuming alternatives.
The biggest energy consumers are mostly the appliances we tend to ignore; you see that hot plate you use to cook beans every Saturday, that hot plate will stain your white at the end of the month, because they usually consume 1000w or more, and beans cannot be sweet if it’s not soft, so why not switch to your gas cylinder and enjoy your meal at a cheaper cost, na food you wan chop, you nor kee person.
Your pressing iron, smoothie blender of 1500-3000w, microwave, electric kettle, Chest Freezer could be a liability in your home, but let us be honest, these appliances make our everyday life easier, in fact they are a necessary evil as we most of the time won’t be happy not using them, they define our lifestyle and comfort, and if you are an “appliance junkie” like me, you probably already realized that you are truly running a mini-factory in your home just like it reflects in your Monthly Light Bill.
Over the years, we have seen the rise of Energy Saving Electrical Appliances in the Nigerian Market, prior to now I have always wondered why should I buy an appliance at 20% higher than its alternative because it is described as “Energy Saving”, “Inverter Compressor “, “Inverter Technology “ or “Smart”, well let us say I know better now. Buying Energy Saving is less costly in the long run; typical example of the English idiom “penny wise pounds foolish”. These days, before purchasing any electrical appliance, the first thing I check is the Wattage, this overrides the aesthetic feature of the product, and you really cannot blame me because what is the point of buying something that I cannot use with my full chest ??
